White Sox's Farquhar continues 'miracle' recovery after brain aneurysm
Danny Farquhar returns to the mound at Guaranteed Rate Field on Friday night for the first time since he left the stadium in an ambulance due to a brain aneurysm on April 20.
The Chicago White Sox invited their right-handed reliever to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Friday’s game as a way to celebrate his recovery from the ordeal, which included multiple operations.
“I had a few doctors tell me how lucky I am,” Farquhar said Friday on ‘Good Morning America.’ “And tell me how lucky I am to be as functional as I am.”
The 31-year-old desires to resume his baseball career but that is no certainty. He must closely monitor his stress level and blood pressure during any activity. He estimated Friday that he’s been able to do eight light workouts since being released from the hospital.
Farquhar came off the mound on April 20 complaining of sharp pain and headaches. He collapsed in the dugout and was rushed to the hospital.
Farquhar said Friday the location of the incident, surrounded by trainers and medical personnel, strikes him as the most fortunate part.
“I was just thinking, man, what if this would have happened in a hotel room by myself,” he said.
The White Sox are not putting any timetable on Farquhar. He is “fully cleared” but progress will be measured. Farquhar has a scar on the left side of his face and will face memory loss, among other side effects of the life-saving operation.
