    Guy arrested over 'homicide' of British couple in Jamaica

    Charlie and Gayle Anderson were 'hugely popular and loved by many', their sons say

    At least one person has been arrested over the murder of a British couple who were living in Jamaica.

    The Jamaica Constabulary said a man, who was considered a person of interest, was detained at a business premises in the capital, Kingston, on Saturday afternoon.

    Charlie, 74, and Gayle Anderson, 71, were found dead in Mount Pleasant on Friday - with police saying they believe the couple were murdered.

    The pair, who had been married for 55 years, had retired to the district of Portland on the Caribbean island after living in Manchester.

    Officers only released details of the arrest overnight on Monday.

    A statement on the force's Twitter page said: "The Police High Command has expressed regret at the recent killing of a retired couple in Portland and is giving their commitment that the top level investigation will continue with alacrity and the highest level of professionalism.

    "They are further stating that one man has been taken into custody as the detectives from the Criminal Investigation Branch Headquarters (CIB HQ) and the Maj Invest Division intensify the investigation into the death of the retired couple at their home in Portland on the weekend.

    "The man, who is considered a person of interest in the matter, was picked up on Saturday afternoon at a business establishment in Kingston."

    Mr and Mrs Anderson had four grandchildren and one great-grandchild and had been married for 55 years.

    According to local media, their bodies had both been burned when they were found at separate locations in Mount Pleasant on Friday.

    Their home had also been subjected to an arson attack.

    The Jamaica Gleaner newspaper reported that two people were in custody in connection with the killings.

    It said that police were investigating whether the Andersons were killed to thwart an investigation into alleged fraud.

    It is alleged $8m (£6m) had been withdrawn from Mrs Anderson's account over a period of time.

    Portland Police Superintendent Duane Wellington told the newspaper: "Two male persons of interests are now in custody, who we believe can assist us with our investigation.

    "We are awaiting a post-mortem report this week to determine the cause of death, and we are also awaiting a report from the fire department."
