The group stage of the World Cup is almost over. What will it take for each team to advance to the knockout round?
OPEN Graphic • Iceland’s qualifying scenario is complicated. First off, it must defeat Croatia today. But that is not enough. It must hope for one of two results in the other game: Argentina winning against Nigeria, but not by a larger margin than Iceland’s win; or Nigeria drawing Argentina, as long as Iceland wins by two or three goals (the exact number depends on how many goals are scored in the draw between Nigeria and Argentina).
The short version is that Iceland must win, preferably by a few goals.
• Iceland has only one goal in the first two games, by Alfred Finnbogason, a striker for Augsberg of Germany. It has surrendered three goals.
• Croatia is a narrow favorite over Iceland in this game.
