It's safe to say that the slip skirt has had a storming comeback as of late. The practical, multipurpose undergarment was originally used to help dresses and skirts hang properly, warm the body in winter and prevent clothing from becoming see-through. Fast forward 100 years and the slip's great-great-granddaughter is an altogether different beast. Liberated from its lingerie status, the slip found its way to the forefront of '90s fashion but, until now, hasn't had much of a look in. However, with the industry's renewed obsession with all things throwback, this season has seen the trend back in fashion editors' good books (if you need proof, just check out the sellout success of Réalisation's leopard-print skirt).
Light, body-skimming and surprisingly versatile, this look has become a Who What Wear wardrobe essential for hot-weather dressing. When it comes to styling, the Insta crowd have enjoyed subverting the ultra-feminine connotations of the slip by pairing it with casual basics and urban accessories. There's something super grunge about the way bloggers like Jeanette Madsen and Monikh Dale have styled the look, except instead of chunky Doc Martens, it's Adidas trainers. However, the joy of the slip is that it can also be dressed up for more formal occasions, whether that's pairing it with a slinky cami top or (our favourite option) tucking in a crisp white shirt and adding heeled sandals and statement earrings. Now that's multipurpose. In need of inspiration? Scroll down to find out how our favourite bloggers have styled the look and shop our edit of the best slip skirts.
