"Playing dress up begins at age five and never really ends", said the late great Kate Spade—it's a sentiment that could not be truer for Renia Jazdzyk, AKA Vens Wife Style, the Newcastle-based, self-styled 50+ fashion blogger who has conquered social media with her 'age is only a number' approach to dressing. A constant source of style inspiration for the Who What Wear team, we've loved following Renata's journey to Insta-fame and we never bore of her unfailing ability to tackle the latest trends in a way that sticks two fingers up at the notion of 'age-appropriateness'. "My blog was born out of my love for fashion, but it is also a kind of a "manifesto" that fashion can inspire and fascinate us regardless of our age," explains Renia. "I wanted to show my peers that women over 50 enter a particular stage of life which can still be interesting. In my opinion, it is easier to convince ourselves to try trends when we see them on a woman of the same or similar age."
There's no avoiding the fact that fashion has an age problem. You need only glance at the catwalk to see that the average model is under the age of 25 and decidedly smooth-skinned and whippet-thin. It's a reality which inevitably leads to the alienation of a large swathe of the general public—women who, ironically, are more likely to invest in designer pieces than their younger counterparts. Renia is living proof that designers, to their detriment, have got it woefully wrong. "I belong to the type of women who like experimenting with fashion and I'm always curious about new fashion trends and I like testing them on myself," Renia muses. "I believe that in order to develop our fashion sense and style we need to experiment with clothes, learn what style works for us, makes us feel good about ourselves."
Renia's sartorial passion is nowhere more evident than on her Instagram profile. Browse her feed and you'll come across a menagerie of pieces: from polka dots and leopard prints to cowboy boots and denim jumpsuits. "I would describe my style as timeless, classic with masculine elements combined with the newest, hottest trends," she explains. "I think I’m at the point when I know what my needs are, what clothes I like and what looks good on me. I have confidence in my own intuition. You may be wearing the most beautiful clothes but if you don’t feel comfortable it can easily affect your confidence. You have to find the compromise between what looks best on you and what's going to give you the most confidence." We couldn't have said it better ourselves.
