A man has been shot dead and his girlfriend seriously injured after a gang of men burst into their home in the middle of the night.
The man, in his 30s, sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead following the incident at about 3am on Sunday morning in Ballincollig, Co Cork.
Another woman and two children, believed to be under the age of six, were also in the property when the incident happened but were not hurt.
The men, who were carrying weapons, entered the house and seriously assaulted the man and his partner, whose injuries are not life-threatening.
The suspects fled the scene and a car was found burnt out at a waterfall about five miles away.
Forensics officers are currently examining the property and where the car was found.

A police spokesman said a post-mortem examination will be carried out later, adding: "It is believed that shortly after 3am a number of men with weapons went into the injured party's house and seriously assaulted the injured male and his partner.
"The assailants then left the house. The injured parties were taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment."
