The end of June is a tricky time to go shopping. The summer solstice has only just happened, but the high street has already been colonised by seasonal sales. The thought of picking through the discount rails of tasselled kaftans and mismatched string bikinis is almost as unappealing as the warm sangria at your work’s summer BBQ (which is why it’s best to just shop our edit of the best sale pieces).

If you’re one of those people who always like to look forward and be the most directional in your clan, may we suggest pre-fall pieces instead? These are the collections that drop mid-season—hence the names pre-spring and pre-fall—and tend to be more commercial (aka less bonkers) than the clothes seen on the runways. They also usually stay in stock for longer. This is all rather confusing since pre-fall is already dropping this month and summer only just started last week, but there’s plenty to wear now and lots of ideas to store up for autumn.

Naturally, the influencers have already got their paws on pre-fall. The Danes are wearing colourful tidbits from Baum und Pferdgarten’s just-in section—see Emili Sindlev in the Morva blouse that looks like a walking version of The Yellow Wallpaper. Sienna Miller also got an early bird special at Louis Vuitton in the form of a pre-fall Fairisle jumper that she wore back in March three months before it launched.

Forget the LBD—it’s all about the WFD. Enter the wafty floral dress. This isn’t pre-fall newness so much as a continuation of a trend that started with Vetements’s spriggy-printed frock and has spiralled into a permanent fixture on the high street. Stine Goya’s chalky blue, full-sleeved version is perfect for summer nuptials now, but feel free to wrap it over a polo-neck come October.

Instagram has spoken: The white prairie blouse is officially a thing. Vilshenko’s pre-fall collection has a puff-sleeved version launching in July that has Anne of Green Gables written all over it (figuratively speaking). Ghost’s linen blouse has the kind of embroidered panels and demure square neckline that Marilla would approve of.

Trouser suits are fine and dandy in spring, but short suits will make lighter work of sticky temperatures (Pernille Teisbaek is already a fan). Racil’s launches next month and is like a shot of sunshine with its loosely tailored blazer and matching Bermuda shorts in buttercup yellow. For something slightly more pared-back, try Arket’s cream tuxedo blazer and shorts.

Tibi has given the Western boot a makeover for pre-fall with an elongated length (perfect for disappearing underneath midi dresses), a kitten heel and an elegantly pointed toe sans cap. You can pre-order now on Moda Operandi and the boots will be shipped between June 30 and August 14.

The Queen’s a big fan of lime-green, and so is Baum und Pferdgarten for pre-fall. Expect to see this Kermit-coloured co-ord (flecked with lemon and lilac blossoms) on a coterie of Danish bloggers come Copenhagen Fashion Week in August.

The smart way to do denim in pre-fall is to give it a tailored spin. Victoria Beckham’s "shacket" (aka skirt jacket) has the kind of neat pockets and nipped-in waist you’re looking for. Either wear with the matching (and admittedly, skin-tight) flares or with a wispy floral skirt while temperatures are balmy.

She designed the It-boots of last autumn, and now Natacha Ramsay-Levi’s pre-fall collection for Chloé has summer’s hottest sneakers. The Sonnie high-tops are treading the path of Isabel Marant’s cult trainer—the Beckett, only without the wedge sole and with a more athletic vibe—but are box-fresh white with a bouncy-looking sole.

Sienna Miller made a strong case for dressing like a Scottish farmer when she wore Louis Vuitton’s Fairisle jumper to Paris Fashion Week. Zara’s short-sleeved knit comes in cheerful stripes of yellow, green, blue and burgundy. Tuck it into white, wide-leg jeans now and squeeze it over a polo-neck in winter.

Christopher Kane’s pre-fall collection looked like a kitsch night at a discotheque, complete with leathers, feathers, boots, collars, brooches, ears and bags all dripping in diamante. The patent ankle booties with diamante fringing are £865 and will be available in July, but we suggest decking out your lobes with Mango’s crystal danglers in the meantime.
