A British man has been killed and another injured after a suspected deliberate hit-and-run in Cyprus.

A British man has been killed and another injured after a suspected deliberate hit-and-run in Cyprus.

Cyprus Police said the two men, aged 39 and 32, were hit as they walked along a road near Paphos at about 2.30am on Saturday.

The older man was later confirmed to have died.

He has been named as Charlie Birch from Powys, Wales.

The second man was taken to a nearby hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police were called to an accident at 3am when someone reported two people lying on the road, the Cyprus Mail reported.

There had reportedly been an altercation at a bar in Coral Bay during which the two Britons reportedly tried to defend a woman who was being hit by one of the suspects.

A car used in the alleged attack was later found by police after being dumped in the sea.

Friends have paid tribute to Mr Birch on Facebook.

One wrote: "Rest in Peace Charlie Birch, you were one of few people in Welshpool who I loved and adored!!!! You looked after me regardless of my many short comings!"

Another said: "Terrible news about Charlie Birch today RIP mate. My sincere condolences to all his family at this awful time."

A third said: "One thing on my mind today. A loyal friend, a lovable rogue and an awesome dad! Life changes in a blink of the eye...rest in peace Charlie Birch. Gone but never forgotten..."

Two people, a 35-year-old man and 23-year-old woman, are facing charges of premeditated murder and reportedly attempted murder.

They appeared before a court in Paphos on Sunday where their custody was extended for eight days.

Cypriot news agency CNA reports that the 32-year-old injured man is expected to be interviewed by police on Monday.
