In 1995, Clueless turned Cher Horowitz and Dionne Davenport into the ultimate style icons. Though they may have been fictional characters, the BFFs rocked plaid with matching blazer jackets, silk slip dresses and button-down minis like nobody we’d seen before—or, arguably, ever since (sorry, Blair Waldorf).
While living out their final year of high school as super-wealthy teens in 1990s America—house parties in classic Alaia, date nights in new-season Calvin Klein—both Cher and Dionne gave us life with their feminist sass, cool wardrobes and an inevitably futile makeover of “new girl on the block,” Tai. Fast-forward to 20 years later, and not only is Clueless still one of the best fashion films ever, but we’d totally still wear every one of Cher’s best looks.
So to pay homage to the total “Betty” and fashion icon that is Cher Horowitz, keep scrolling for eight of the best outfits from Clueless. We guarantee they’ll already be in your wardrobe or on your shopping list.
So we might give the knee socks a miss this time around, but that longline blazer over a white blouse gets a big thumbs-up from us.
Do we spy a shearling trim on class rival Amber? Give it to us on leather or denim. Come autumn, we’ll be obsessed with it.
Ah, the yellow plaid skirt suit. (This is arguably the most iconic look from the whole film.) Plaid came back in a huge way last season and isn’t going anywhere yet. If you’re not up for head-to-toe yellow, channel Dionne’s black-and-white check skirt suit instead.
Cher said this of her date night slip dress: “Sometimes you have to show a little skin. This reminds boys of being naked, and then they think of sex.” Though it may not have worked so well for her, she likely planted a seed for Carrie Bradshaw’s famous “naked dress.”
Camisoles layered over crisp white T-shirts were a ’90s wardrobe staple. In 2018, nothing’s changed.
Oh, ’90s berets. These were truly nailed in fictitious L.A.—long before Blair Waldorf made it her Upper East Side signature.
Just a quick scan of Instagram makes it clear that button-down miniskirts are still a must-have. Topshop has some great denim options right now.
Super-chic plaid co-ords and a beret? Consider this look bookmarked for autumn.
